Stylish Summer Layers & How to Stay Warm in a Cold Office Without Looking Out of Season

We’ve all been there: it’s 90 degrees outside, but the office AC is cranked up like it’s the middle of January. You leave the house in breezy summer attire only to find yourself freezing at your desk by 10 a.m. So how do you dress professionally in the summer and stay warm indoors without layering up like it’s winter?

Here are some stylish and season-appropriate tips to help you stay comfortable and chic:

1. Lightweight Layers Are Your Best Friend

Skip the bulky knits. Instead, go for light cardigans, structured blazers in linen blends, or soft cropped jackets. These pieces add polish without the weight. Look for neutral tones or soft summer colors like ivory, tan, blush, or light blue to keep the look seasonal.

2. Play with Fabric

Choose fabrics that insulate lightly but still feel breathable. A soft long-sleeve blouse under a sleeveless dress can keep your arms warm without adding winter weight.

3. Keep a ‘Cold Office Kit’

Consider keeping a dedicated office sweater or shawl at your desk. Choose something stylish that pairs well with multiple outfits, like a ribbed neutral wrap or a cropped sweater. Bonus: it won’t take up space in your summer wardrobe rotation.

4. Closed-Toe Shoes with a Summer Twist

If your feet get cold but you want to avoid winter boots or heavy loafers, opt for closed-toe flats, block heels, or slingbacks in summery colors or woven textures. Espadrille-inspired closed-toes and colorful mules can also offer that perfect in-between.

5. Lean Into Seasonal Colors and Prints

You can wear layers without losing your summer vibe by choosing fun, bright colors, floral prints, or pastel shades. A navy-and-white striped blazer or a floral scarf adds personality without adding weight.

6. Silhouettes Matter

Instead of long, heavy trousers, try ankle-length pants, maxi or midi skirts in structured fabrics. Pair them with a tucked-in blouse and a sleek jacket for a professional and temperature-balanced outfit.

The goal is to balance comfort with confidence so you can walk into any room, no matter the temperature, looking and feeling polished.
